She earned her Ph.D. at Jilin University in 2001. She was then awarded a postdoctoral fellowship by the mechanic department at Tianjin University from 2001 to 2003. She has been Associate Then Full Professor at Tianjin University from 2003 to present. Dr. Lei spent the year from 2013 to 2014 at the University of Kansas, USA, as a Visiting Professorial Academic. Her work has focused on the areas of soil and site improvement, the behavior of shallow and deep foundations and the laboratory and insitu characterization of residual soils.Dr. Lei has been a vice-chairman of the Youth Union Committee of Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering - China Civil Engineering Society (CISMGE-CCES), a vice-chairmen of Soil Mechanics Teaching Committee of CISMGE-CCES, a deputy secretary general of Soft Soil Department Committee of CISMGE-CCES, a council member of CISMGE-CCES, a council member of Risk and Insurance Research Branch of China Civil Engineering Society, a council member of Geotechnical Engineering Information Technology Application Committee of Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, a member of Soil Test Committee of Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, a member of International Association of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, a member of International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG).Dr. Lei has secured funding with the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Science Projects of Provincial and Ministry, for 31 projects on development of Geotechnical Engineering. She authors and co-authors eight textbooks, and has published more than a hundred scholarly papers, 46 indexed by SCI or EI.
