He received his PhD in geophysics in 1989 at Princeton University, where he worked with W. Jason Morgan, one of the greatest geophysicists who achieved worldwide acclaim for his contributions to the theory of plate tectonics. In 1991, John Chen joined the faulty at Oregon State University and promoted to Associated Professor in 1996. Since 2001, John Chen returned to China and served as professor at Peking University. During that year, he was awarded as the 4th Distinguished Professor of Chang Jiang Scholars.  Personal Profile Education background 1978.02-1982.07 Earth and Space Department, University of Science and Technology of China, Bachelor (Geophysics) 1983.08-1985.06 Department of Geology and Geophysics, Princeton University, Master (Geophysics) 1985.07-1989.04  Department of Geology and Geophysics, Princeton University, Doctor (Geophysics) Work experience 1989.05-1990.12 Scripps Oceanography Institute of University of California San Diego, University of California, Post-doctor      1991.01-1996.06 Oceanography Institute, Oregon State University, Assistant Professor      1994.06-1994.09 Scripps Oceanography Institute of University of California San Diego, University of California, Guest Professor      1995.06-1995.09 Scripps Oceanography Institute of University of California San Diego, University of California, Guest Professor      1996.07-2002.12 Oceanography Institute, Oregon State University, Associate Professor      2004.04-2004.08 Earth Dynamics Research Center of the Science Department, Ehime University, Guest Professor      2001.10-2013.10 School of Earth and Space Sciences, Theory and Application Geophysical Research Institute of Peking University, Institute of theoretical and Applied Geophysics, Head      2015.07 - present Department of Ocean Science & Engineering, South University of Science and Technology, Chair Professor   Awards 1989-1990 Awarded the Green Scholar Scholarship of Scripps Oceanography Institute, University of California San Diego, University of California      1994-1995 Awarded the scholarship of Earthquake Research Center, University of Southern California      1994-1995 Awarded the Green Scholar Scholarship of Scripps Oceanography Institute, University of California San Diego, University of California      2002-2005 Awarded the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars 2009.6.20 Awarded the First Prize (ranking the first) in 2008 Teaching Achievement Award, Peking University 2009.5 Awarded the Second Prize (ranking the second) in 2008 Teaching Achievements (high education), Beijing. Personal Profile Research John Chen is mainly engaged in marine geophysics, earthquake geotectonics and other research. He has made a pioneering contribution to the dynamics of the oceanic spreading plate boundary and the formation mechanism of the oceanic crust. The proposed model of the formation mechanism of the oceanic crust can better explain the main results of the seismic observation of the oceanic crust of the mid ocean ridge and the results of the field observation of the ophiolite suite on the continent, which has been widely used by the International Marine Geoscience community After returning to Peking University from the United States in 2001, he opened up a new field of "seismic geotectonics", carried out field mobile seismic array observation, developed and improved a variety of seismological methods to carry out comprehensive inversion research on the three-dimensional fine structure of the crust and upper mantle in important structural areas of the Chinese mainland, and published a series of influential research results in international journals. The "corner flow" model of the asthenosphere in southern Tibet is proposed based on the sks splitting research results of the hi crimb two-dimensional array, and the volume wave imaging results reveal a new model of the Indian lithosphere subducting at a large angle after a small-scale subduction to the south of the Bangong Lake Nujiang suture zone. The fine wave velocity structure in the depth range of 0-700km in Northeast China is obtained by using the joint inversion of body wave and surface wave. A new "local upper mantle convection model in Northeast China" is proposed for the "volcanic activity in Northeast China" which has long puzzled the geosciences circle, which has attracted the high attention of the international Geosciences circle. Publications Read More He used to be president of Interridge international mid ocean ridge Association, editor in chief of marine Geophys, editorial board member of jgr solid earth and review expert of Geoscience Department of NSFC. He has published 130 academic papers in total and cited 2038 times completely, and the highest citation for a single paper is 270 times. He has presided over more than ten major research projects:key projects, 973863 projects of the Ministry of science and technology, special scientific research projects of the earthquake industry, and industry surveys of the Ministry of land and resources.
