Graphene has been proved both theoretically and experimentally a super strong material with large fracture strain, which make it a perfect reinforcement to enhance the CSMRS of SMP. We are investigating the effects of graphene on the mechanical and shape memory performance of SMP through modification of both the chemistry of graphene and the interface between the graphene and SMP. Another quite interesting research of SMP that are focused is to use SMP as smart soft substrate to study the stress focusing problems of thin film, which include crumples, wrinkles, crests. 2) Assembly of Carbon Nanotube and Graphene Currently, carbon nanotube and graphene of varying size and chemistry can be prepared with high yield. They exhibit many fascinating properties. How to assembly those carbon nano materials with controllable porous structures is the key to many applications, such as catalysts, energy conversion and storage. Hydrothermal, filtration, freeze-drying, self-assembly induced by capped molecules (such as proteins and DNAs) are the main methods to realize the fabrication of regular structures. I am studying the wet-spin method for the assembly of carbon nano materials, which is firstly reported by Dr. Philippe Poulin from CNRS in 1999. All the precursor materials for the wet-spin are “frozen” once they come into contact with coagulation solution, and there are so many interesting dynamical interactions and phenomena arise in such a short time. I am trying to understand how the morphology, dimensionality and chemistry of those carbon nano materials in the precursor solution related their “frozen” dynamics and eventually their structures. 3) Multi-functional Energy storage devices The advent of soft electronics has been revolutionarily expanding the applications of electronics. Smart energy storage materials, which can not only store electrochemical energy but also possess the sensitivity to the environment stimulus, can provide novel multi-functionalities complying with the current development of soft electronics. We are trying to design 3-D electrodes with hierarchical structures, as well as smart polymers based substrates, and eventually, multi-functional energy storage devices simultaneously having high energy storage capability and environment-sensitive characteristics are fabricated.
